How To Improve Weight Loss By Eating Carbs

How To Improve Weight Loss By Eating Carb

As the pros and cons of carbohydrates continue to be debated in the popular press, a new twist has emerged. Resistant starch is a type of carbohydrate said to accelerate weight loss. Weight-loss coach Cameron Mackay shows you how it works, and how to get more in your diet.

What is resistant starch?

Most fibers and starches are digested and absorbed into your body through the small intestine. Resistant starch is a unique type of fiber found in some carbohydrate foods that your body finds hard to digest. Because it “resists” digestion, it arrives whole in your large intestine. Once there, bacteria ferment it, producing fatty acids that are absorbed into your bloodstream — it’s these unique fatty acids that have some interesting weight-loss properties.

How does resistant starch help you lose weight?
A study published in the journal Nutrition & Metabolism in 2004 showed resistant starch can increase fat oxidation significantly, helping to change the way the body burns fat as fuel.

One specific fatty acid produced from resistant starch fermentation — called butyrate — is thought to block the body’s ability to burn carbohydrates. Usually carbohydrates are used first for fuel, but when butyrate is present, stored body fat and recently consumed dietary fat are used earlier as an energy source.

Researchers found that replacing just 5.4 percent of carbohydrates with resistant starch increased fat burning (the use of fat as fuel instead of carbohydrates) by 23 percent. Resistant starch in a meal is associated with less fat storage after that meal, and over the long term, that could help to significantly reduce the storage of body fat.

An earlier study, published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition in 1996, showed that when normal flour is replaced with a flour alternative that is high in resistant starch, the kilojoule content of that food is reduced. This is another way that resistant starch can contribute to weight management and weight loss.

Are there any extra health benefits?
In addition to weight control, resistant starch is thought to provide other health benefits, including:

* improved diabetes management;
* improved bowel health;
* reduced blood cholesterol levels;
* reduced blood triglyceride levels; and
* increased satiety (fullness) from food.

What foods are high in resistant starch?

There are actually several varieties of resistant starch, although they all have a very similar function. One of the best sources of resistant starch is called Hi-Maize, which comes from a special breed of corn. It’s used as a food additive in breads, pasta and breakfast cereals without altering the taste, color or texture of the food. You can also buy it at health food shops and use it instead of flour. Other sources of resistant starch include:

* intact wholegrain cereals, seeds and nuts, such as oats, rye, wheat, barley, semolina, corn, linseed, sesame;
* legumes such as lentils and baked beans are a very good source of resistant starch;
* unripe fruit, especially bananas; and
* cooking and cooling carbohydrate foods can also increase their resistant starch content, such as cold rice (sushi), cold pasta salad and potato salad.

How To Start Your Own Weight Loss Program

How To Start Your Own Weight Loss Program

Remember there's more to you than meets the eye. You've got personality, brains, feelings... in short, all those things that make you, YOU. So why diet? After all, you're more than just a body, and things that really matter can't be measured on a scale. That said, there are some very good sound reasons for dieting.

After all, dieting is not just for weight loss or weight gain. No, the true meaning of 'diet' is in choosing foods and setting eating habits that will keep you healthy, strong, and feeling your best. It takes planning and dedication. It means setting goals and following through. But it doesn't have to be a chore. No, with the right tools it can even be fun ... especially when you start to see the results that you're looking for!

Before, choosing a diet, there are five extremely simple Steps, which if you really apply you will probably end up losing weight without even trying! Doesn't that sound interesting. Really No kidding ... try the following:

Step 1) Always sit down when you eat, preferable at a table. Don't eat while standing, walking, driving or talking on the phone.

Step 2) Don't read or watch television while you eat.

Step 3) Eat only when your stomach is empty. At least 3 to 4 hours from your last meal.

Step 4) Don't take a bite until you've already swallowed the previous bite. Obvious? Try observing people and you'll see them stuffing their mouths, which are still full. They probably talk at the same time! So, bite, chew, swallow, bite, chew, swallow.

Step 5) Don't eat when you're not hungry. No, I'm being serious and I know that this sounds stupid. For example when at home wait 5 minutes before taking second helpings. If you wait, you'll probably find that you're no longer hungry, whereas if you don't wait you could probably eat thirds! Remember ... Wait five minutes before taking more.

A good diet doesn't end when you finally reach your target goal. Maintaining good nutrition, regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle is a continuing process. Only this will give you the energy to face the challenges of your busy day, boost your self-image, and make you look and feel better.

And there's no feeling like the satisfaction when you achieve your goals by sticking to a sensible, healthy, diet plan. Besides, where would we be without food? Changing your diet to prevent or reverse heart disease, reduce your blood pressure, or to get the better of your diabetes and, naturally to reach your desired weight, is not just a matter of cutting out butter and eggs and counting the amount of fat grams you eat each day. For instance, most Americans get close to 40% of their calories from fat! This is twice the recommended amount if you already suffer from heart disease.

There are many misconceptions and confusion concerning fat these days, some seem to make sense, others are just plain dumb! Remember, concerning fat, several things are now known for sure. It is known that most of us eat too much fat and that obesity is a major health concern, increasing the risk for heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, back pain and cancer. It is also known that saturated fat, more than anything else, is responsible for increasing our cholesterol levels.

I know it's weird, but it's been found, ironically, that when people focus exclusively on eliminating cholesterol from their daily diet they may unknowingly move on to a diet high in saturated fats! Some people decide to become vegetarian, leaving out meat and eggs, but the salad dressings, nuts and peanut butter, for instance, do more damage than a lean steak! Message: be careful what you eat, you may be surprised.

Professional Weight Loss Tips For 2009

Professional Weight Loss Tips For 2009

It is the start of a new year, 2009, and many people are once again starting out on a new diet or weight loss campaign. In this article I will be providing people with help and assistance that will hopefully prove to be beneficial in ensuring that this is one diet that ultimately proves to be successful.

One of the biggest mistakes that people make when attempting to lose weight is the fact that they try to eat next to nothing in each day. This is seriously wrong and can actually cause more damage than good. To go from eating a lot of food to eating virtually nothing is just down right crazy.

So what should we be doing in our quest to lose weight? Well there are a number of things. To start with we should start to exercise on a more regular basis. Yes I understand that the “E” word may sound a little scary but come on folks if you are serious about losing weight then it has to be done. For those of you who enjoy watching the television why not spend time on the exercise bike at the same time? It all helps at the end of the day.

Breakfast is widely regarded as the most important meal of the day and is therefore one which should not be missed. Please remember that to eat a fatty English cooked breakfast each morning is not the way to go!

Eating the three main meals of the day, cutting out the snacks that people generally eat between meals and increasing the amount we exercise are generally the three essential elements to a successful diet.

Any changes such as the above should not be seen as a short term thing. These have to be life changes if you are going to stay lean and trim over the long term.
